An Insight on the American Institute of Architects
Also referred to as AIA, the American Institute of Architects is an organization made up of architects who are professionals living in the United States. The headquarters of the organization are located in Washington, DC. It provides community redevelopment, education, government advocacy as well as public outreach in order to offer support to the profession of architecture and enhance its public image. Currently, AIA is led by Robert Ivy who serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Thomas Vonier as the President of the company. Since its inception in 1857, The American Institute of Architects has gone through many changes and evolution.
Initially, the AIA was established by 13 architects who had the aim of promoting the practical and scientific perfection of all its members. The architects also aimed at elevating the professional’s standing. The original members of AIA included Henry W. Cleaveland, Charles Babcock, Henry Dudley, Richard Morris Hunt, Leopold Eidlitz, Fred A. Petersen, Edward Gardiner, John Welch, Jacob Wrey Mould, Joseph C. Wells, and Richard Upjohn. Richard Upjohn served as the first president of the organization and was responsible for making sure that the strategic goals of the organization are achieved. After a short while, 16 prominent architects were invited to join the organization and they included Thomas U. Walter, Calvert Vaux, and Alexander Jackson Davis.
Before the formation of the American Institute of Architects, it was possible for anyone to claim that are architects since in the United States there were no architectural licensing laws or schools of architecture. The organization was initially known as New York Society of Architects but was later changed to the American Institute of Architects. In 2857, the initial members of the organization signed a new constitution and also a certificate of incorporation. By 1880’s architects in other cities has been asked to join the organization and these included Chicago, Baltimore, Albany, Cincinnati, Boston, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Rhode Island, St. Louis as well as Washington DC.
Robert Ivy is the current Chief Executive Officer of American Institute of Architects. He has been serving in the organization for some years and is also an established architect. He has been in the field of architecture for many years and has therefore managed to acquire a lot of expertise and experience. Robert Ivy has earned a reputation as one of the most experienced and successful architects. He serves as a mentor to other upcoming architects who aspire to become successful.
